Concept of “Problem based on ages”–07

Question: The ratio of present ages of P and Q is 7: 3. After 4 years their ages will be in the ratio of 2: 1. What is the present age of P? [Ans. (b) 28 yrs]
(a) 24 yrs (b) 28 yrs (c) 32 yrs (d) Data inadequate (e) none of these

Solution:
Detailed Explanation:
First Method: Let the present ages of P and Q are 7x and 3x. After 4 years their ages will be 7x+4 and 3x+4. Given that the ratio of their ages after 4 years is 2: 1.
(7x + 4)/(3x + 4) = 2: 1
Or, x = 4 years
P = 7×4 = 28 yrs Ans.

Second Method: Let the ages of P and Q after 4 years is 2x: 1x. Their present ages are respectively 2x-4 and 1x-4. Given that the ratio of their present ages is 7: 3.
(2x - 4)/(1x - 4) = 7: 3
Or, x = 4 ×4 = 16 years
P = 2×16 - 4 = 28 yrs Ans.
